Periodontics is an extremely important part of dentistry, but it is a subject that most people are not familiar with. In many cases, patients hear the words “periodontology” or “periodontist” for the first time when their chief dentist recommends that they come to us!

Fundamentals of Periodontology

Periodontology is a dental specialty that involves finding, diagnosing, and treating diseases that affect the gums, jawbone, and other structures that support teeth. The treatment of problems in these areas of the mouth is very different from conventional dentistry, which is why there are specialists such as periodontists (we!).

Why periodontics is important

Healthy gums and jawbone are essential for a functional mouth and an attractive smile. Patients are often referred to a periodontist because they are dealing with advanced gum disease, which can cause symptoms such as sensitivity, swelling, recession, and loose/missing teeth. A dentist trained in periodontics can identify what is causing a patient’s problems and then apply treatments designed to address that problem directly. Often these procedures cannot be offered by regular dentists.
